About Japanese Studies

Macquarie’s Japanese Studies was established in 1988 with the sponsorship of the Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Co. Ltd. and the City of Nagoya. It has made strong progress since then to become one of Australia’s leading centres for Japanese Studies.

The first recognition of its teaching strength came in 1989 when Macquarie’s Japanese Studies was nominated by the NSW Department of Education as a training centre for Japanese teachers and was awarded the Asian Studies Council grant. Macquarie’s Japanese Studies still maintains its strength in Japanese teacher training.

International recognition came in 1995, when Macquarie’s Japanese Studies became the first recipient in Australia of the Nippon Foundation grant of A$2 million to establish the Nippon Foundation Fund. The grant came in recognition of the Japanese Studies’ contributions and achievements made in the field of Japanese language teaching and in Japanese teacher education. Macquarie Japanese Studies Centre for Teaching Development (MJS Centre) was established as a result. MJS Centre is now one of the 7 such centres established around the world.

The strength of Macquarie’s Japanese Studies is demonstrated also in the remarkable achievements made by its students and graduates. Some fifty students have received internationally recognised scholarships since 1990. Numerous students have received academic prizes and awards, including three representations to world youth summits and conferences in recent years.

IT Innovations

The Japanese Studies at Macquarie is proud of its innovative approach to education. Through continuous research and the knowledge of latest learning methodology, Japanese Studies aims to offer scholarly teaching of an international standard, designed for graduates of the 21st Century. A full range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs are offered. We also offer Certificate in Languages and Diploma in Languages.

Macquarie's Japanese Studies is at the forefront of technology aided language teaching. Based on research and the latest teaching methodologies, our team, together with Fujitsu Australia, created an internationally acclaimed series of innovative CD-ROM teaching tools: Kantaro 1, 2 and 3. A new large scale CD-ROM, Gengoro, has now been added to the series.

From the year 2000 Macquarie University has offered the entire introductory Japanese program online; the first program of its kind in Australia. The program has been designed to meet the requirements of students of Japanese from diverse backgrounds. View online demo.

First year language units can be studied in a flexible way. Students can attend as on-campus or distance education students.

Online study may be suitable for:
