Research
The current research profile for Asian Studies is rich and varied for both the Chinese and Japanese disciplines. The fields of research being undertaken by the Chinese staff include: Modern Chinese Literature, Confucianism and Intellectual History, the History of Shanghai, the Qing dynasty court and theatre, Languages of medieval Central Asian and Nestorian monuments in Quanzhou. The Japanese Studies staff are actively involved in research on pure and applied linguistics in Japanese, Manga - Visual narrative and social commentary, Japanese literature, ICT-failitated language teaching and socio-legal studies of Japan.

Dr Mio Bryce

Research interests:
Historical, socio-cultural and psychological issues depicted in literature. She is currently involved in interdisciplinary research into youth cultures, with particular focus on manga and anime, in conjunction with the English Department at Macquarie University.
Dr Shirley Chan

Research interests:
Dr Chan has research interest in Chinese philosophy, especially Confucianism, and early Chinese history. Her current research is on the Confucian political thinking in the newly excavated Guodian bamboo slips.

Dr Ye Xiaoqing

Research interests:
Ye Xiaoqing was a research fellow at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and was awarded a PhD from the Australian National University in 1992. Her main research fields are in Chinese history and the history of Chinese medicine. She currently has an ARC large grant to do archival work on the social status of Peking opera performers in the late Qing.
